Pocket Scale Shows Overload: Troubleshooting Checklist

Pocket Scale Shows Overload: Troubleshooting Checklist

If your pocket scale shows overload, remove the item and any weighing container immediately. The warning commonly means the total load exceeds the scale’s maximum capacity.

If the message stays on with an empty platform, check the startup procedure and look for unintended pressure or obstruction. A warning that persists can indicate damage requiring service.

Do not press down on the platform or add more weight to test it. American Weigh Scales manuals warn that overloading can permanently damage the scale. awscales.com

Quick Pocket Scale Overload Checklist

Check What to do When to stop
Remove the load Take off the item and removable container Do not add another load while the warning remains
Confirm the code Check the exact message in the manual Do not confuse OL with LO
Check capacity Find the model’s maximum rated load Use another scale if the load is too heavy
Include the container Add container weight to contents weight Tare does not increase capacity
Restart empty Follow the normal startup procedure Seek help if overload persists
Inspect clearance Look for packaging, debris or outside pressure Do not pry up the platform
Review damage history Consider drops, impacts or crushing Stop if the platform is visibly damaged
Verify performance Check an appropriate reference after normal operation returns Do not rely on incorrect or unstable readings

1. Remove Everything Being Weighed

Take the item and any removable weighing container off the platform. Leave permanent platform components in place.

If the message clears, do not immediately put the same load back. First determine whether its combined weight is within capacity.

If you do not know approximately how heavy the item is, use a scale with sufficient capacity rather than testing the pocket scale’s limit.

Why This Matters for Pocket Scales

A small tray, jar or storage container can consume a significant portion of a pocket scale’s capacity. An item that looks lightweight may still exceed the remaining capacity once the container is included.

2. Confirm the Exact Error Code

Check the model number and match the displayed message to its manual.

Possible overload codes include OL, O_Ld, OUEr or EEEE, depending on the model. These are not interchangeable across every scale.

OL and LO Are Different

Message Common interpretation First action
OL or O_Ld Overload Remove the load
LO or Lo Low batteries Restore the correct battery power
UNST Unstable conditions Check the surface and environment
OUTZ Zero-range problem on some models Follow the model’s instructions

The AWS CP2-series manual distinguishes O_Ld, meaning maximum capacity exceeded, from Lo, meaning low batteries. awscales.com

If the message is actually a low-battery warning, use the specified replacement batteries. Energizer’s battery-care guidance advises against mixing old and new batteries or different battery types. North America

3. Check Capacity Before Weighing Again

A specification such as 100g × 0.01g describes two different characteristics:

  • 100g capacity: The maximum rated load.
  • 0.01g readability: The smallest displayed increment.

The second number does not increase how much the scale can hold. Switching units also does not change capacity.

NIST’s weighing and scales FAQs provides background on scale divisions and measurement terminology. NIST

Example: Container Weight Causes Overload

Suppose you have a 100g-capacity pocket scale:

Component Weight
Empty container 40g
Contents 75g
Combined load 115g
Maximum capacity 100g

The contents alone are within capacity, but the complete load exceeds it by 15g.

Use a lighter container, reduce the quantity or choose a higher-capacity scale.

4. Remember That Tare Does Not Add Capacity

Pressing TARE resets the displayed reference after a container is placed on the platform. The scale still physically supports the container.

For example, a 200g-capacity scale holding a 60g container has 140g of capacity remaining, even if the display reads zero.

Do not try to clear an overload by pressing tare. Remove the excessive load instead.

5. Restart With an Empty Platform

If overload appears during startup:

  1. Remove the item and container.
  2. Turn the scale off.
  3. Place it on a firm, level surface.
  4. Make sure no cover or packaging presses against the platform.
  5. Restart using the normal procedure.
  6. Let initialization finish before adding anything.

Follow the manual if it specifies how a removable pan or accessory should be fitted.

There is no universal battery-removal sequence or button combination for clearing every pocket scale error.

6. Inspect the Platform Without Forcing It

With the scale off, check accessible areas for:

  • Packaging trapped around the platform
  • A cover resting on the weighing surface
  • Loose debris at the platform edges
  • An incorrectly fitted removable tray
  • A container touching the housing
  • Visible tilting or displacement

Clean only as directed by the manufacturer.

Do not pry up the platform, push tools underneath it or bend it back into position. If the platform is visibly damaged, stop troubleshooting and contact support.

The AWS maintenance guide explains appropriate care and storage.

7. Check the Surface and Surroundings

Use a stable table and keep the scale clear of outside contact. Do not hold it in your hand while weighing.

Move away from fans, vibration and appliances that shake the work surface. These conditions can interfere with readings, although they do not necessarily cause an overload code.

NIST’s guidance for sensitive weighing applications explains the importance of sturdy support and protection from air movement and vibration. NIST

Improving the environment does not increase capacity or repair overload damage.

8. Consider Drops, Impacts and Storage Pressure

A pocket scale can experience excessive force without a heavy item being deliberately weighed.

Consider whether the scale was:

  • Dropped
  • Crushed in a bag
  • Stored beneath other objects
  • Pressed firmly during cleaning
  • Used with an item dropped onto the platform

Impact can produce forces greater than gently placing the same object on the platform. A protective cover should be used as instructed, but it does not make a pocket scale crush-resistant.

If the problem began after an impact and remains with an empty platform, seek service guidance.

9. Verify Performance After the Warning Clears

A normal display does not prove the scale escaped damage.

Once normal operation returns:

  1. Confirm that the empty reading is stable.
  2. Check that the correct unit is selected.
  3. Place a suitable reference weight gently in the center.
  4. Wait for the reading to settle.
  5. Remove the weight and check the return to zero.
  6. Repeat and compare results with the model’s specifications.

NIST’s guide to uncertainty for balances and scales explains why reference weights, repeatability and other influences matter when evaluating results. NIST

Do Not Use Coins as Calibration Weights

The U.S. Mint publishes nominal coin specifications, but an individual coin is not a substitute for the calibration weight required by your scale. Use the specified reference mass and appropriate weight quality. U.S. Mint

10. Calibrate Only When the Manual Calls for It

Calibration cannot increase capacity or repair a damaged weighing sensor.

If your model’s troubleshooting procedure calls for calibration, follow it exactly. Otherwise, do not repeatedly enter calibration mode to force an overload message to disappear.

When calibration is appropriate, use the correct reference weight and a stable setup. See the AWS guide on how to calibrate a digital scale.

The AWS scale FAQs also discusses overload-related problems and service guidance.

Pocket Scale Still Shows Overload With Nothing on It?

Stop adding test loads if the warning persists after the permitted checks.

An empty-platform overload can involve obstruction, displacement, a sensor problem or another internal fault. The code alone cannot identify which cause applies.

Preventing Another Pocket Scale Overload

Choose a model that accommodates the complete expected load, place items gently and keep pressure off the platform during storage.

If the scale will determine a sale price by weight, also verify that the exact model is approved and suitable for that application. NIST Handbook 44 contains technical requirements for applicable commercial weighing devices; local requirements must also be checked. NIST

Frequently Asked Questions

Does overload mean my pocket scale is broken?

Not necessarily. Removing an excessive load may clear the warning. Persistent errors or changed measurement performance require further investigation.

Can pressing tare clear overload?

Tare does not reduce the physical load. Remove the item and container instead.

Why does overload appear with a small item?

Check the container’s weight, the scale’s capacity and the exact error code. If the total load is clearly within capacity, follow the manual and contact support if needed.

Can I fix overload by changing units?

No. Grams, ounces and other units describe weight differently but do not change the scale’s maximum load.

Is it safe to use the scale after the message disappears?

Verify performance before relying on measurements. Stop using it if readings are unstable, incorrect or outside the applicable specifications.
