A digital scale should usually show zero when its platform is empty. But if it continues to read 0, 0.0 or 0.00 after you place an item on it, check the setup before assuming the scale is broken.
The item may be too light for the scale, the load may have been included in its startup zero, or the tare function may have reset the display. A container touching another surface can also prevent the scale from supporting the full weight.
Start with an empty platform, complete the normal startup procedure and test a suitable reference weight within the scale’s capacity.
Why Is My Digital Scale Stuck on Zero?
The circumstances help identify the cause.
| What happens | What to check | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Zero appears with nothing on the platform | Normal operation | Add a suitable load after startup |
| Zero appears after pressing tare | Load was set as the reference | Remove the load and follow the zeroing procedure |
| Tiny items do not register | Readability or minimum-load limitation | Check whether the scale suits the item |
| Item was present before startup | Startup zero may include the item | Restart with the platform empty |
| Small additions fail to register | Possible zero-tracking behavior | Use the loading method specified in the manual |
| Large container produces an unexpected zero | Outside support or incorrect placement | Check that only the platform supports it |
| Suitable reference weight produces no response | Setup, power, operating mode or possible fault | Follow the checks below |

1. Confirm Whether Zero Is Expected
An empty scale showing a stable zero is generally ready to weigh.
Zero can also be expected after you place an empty container on the platform and press TARE. The scale is then displaying the weight added after that reference point.
Example: Tare With a Bowl
- Turn on the scale with its platform empty.
- Place the bowl on the platform.
- Press tare as instructed.
- Wait for zero.
- Add the ingredients.
If you press tare again after adding the ingredients, the display may return to zero because you have established another reference.
Tare does not remove the physical load or increase capacity. NIST’s weighing and scales FAQs explains tare and related weighing concepts. NIST
2. Restart With the Platform Empty
If an item is already on the scale when you switch it on, some models may include that load in the startup zero. Others may display an error.
Try the normal startup procedure:
- Remove the item and container.
- Turn the scale off.
- Place it on a firm, level surface.
- Check that the platform is unobstructed.
- Turn it on.
- Wait for initialization to finish.
- Add a suitable load gently.
Follow your manual if the model has different requirements for a removable pan or accessory.
Find the correct instructions in the AWS product manuals. Avoid undocumented button combinations or reset procedures.
3. Check Whether the Item Is Too Light
A scale may show zero when the item is below its ability to register a meaningful change.
For example, a scale displaying in 1g increments is not suitable for measuring an individual item weighing a small fraction of a gram. AWS troubleshooting guidance similarly explains that a load smaller than a scale’s display increment may not change the display. awscales.com
Readability Is Not Minimum Reliable Weight
These specifications describe different things:
- Capacity: Maximum rated load.
- Readability: Smallest displayed increment.
- Minimum load: A model-specific operating limit, where specified.
- Minimum reliable sample weight: The smallest amount that meets the measurement requirements under the relevant conditions.
A scale displaying 0.001g does not automatically measure a 0.001g sample accurately.
NIST’s guide to uncertainty for balances and scales discusses how readability, repeatability and reference uncertainty affect measurement quality. NIST
If a larger suitable reference registers normally but your tiny item does not, you may need a scale better matched to the application.
4. Check the Selected Weighing Unit
The same item produces different numerical values in grams, ounces and other units.
Depending on the unit and displayed resolution, a small item may round to zero. Check the unit indicator before interpreting the number.
If the model supports grams, select grams for a straightforward diagnostic check. Confirm the available units and their display increments in the manual.
Changing units does not improve the underlying measurement performance or increase capacity.
5. Consider Automatic Zero Tracking
Some scales automatically compensate for small changes near zero. Depending on the model and loading method, adding material extremely slowly may allow part of the change to be treated as zero drift.
This behavior is not the same as a broken display.
Check whether your manual describes:
- Automatic zero tracking
- Minimum load
- Recommended loading technique
- Settings for dispensing or incremental additions
Do not disable settings or alter service parameters without instructions. If you routinely add very small quantities, ask whether the scale is suitable for that method.
6. Make Sure the Platform Supports the Entire Load
A scale cannot measure weight supported elsewhere.
Check whether:
- A bowl rests on the housing.
- A bag touches the table.
- A container leans against a wall.
- A cable holds part of the item’s weight.
- Your hand supports the container.
- The item sits on a protective cover instead of the weighing platform.
Center a suitable container and leave clearance around it.
Also confirm that any removable pan is installed correctly. Do not remove permanent components or pry up the platform.
7. Inspect for Debris or Restricted Movement
Crumbs, dust or spilled material can interfere with the weighing mechanism. Visible platform displacement may also follow an impact or overload.
Turn the scale off and inspect accessible areas. Clean only according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Do not:
- Push tools beneath the platform
- Spray liquid into the housing
- Force a tilted platform into place
- Open the housing to adjust the sensor
The AWS maintenance guide explains appropriate cleaning and handling.
8. Check Power and Operating Mode
A lit display does not rule out a power problem. Check batteries if zero is accompanied by flickering, resets, a low-battery symbol or other unusual behavior.
Use the specified batteries or charging supply. Replace the complete battery set rather than mixing old and new batteries, as advised in Energizer’s battery-care guidance. North America
Also check whether the scale is in ordinary weighing mode. Depending on the model, counting, hold or other functions may change how results appear.
Consult the manual rather than assuming every display number represents live weight.
9. Use a Stable Test Setup
Place the scale on a firm, level surface away from drafts and vibration. Let it reach its permitted operating temperature.
Although these conditions more commonly cause unstable readings than a display stuck at zero, they should be controlled before assessing performance.
NIST’s guidance for sensitive weighing applications explains why sturdy support, airflow and vibration matter. NIST
10. Test With an Appropriate Reference Weight
After checking startup, tare, units and platform clearance, test a suitable reference weight:
- Start with an empty platform and stable zero.
- Confirm ordinary weighing mode.
- Gently place the reference in the center.
- Wait for the result to settle.
- Remove it and observe the return to zero.
- Repeat if the scale responds normally.
The reference must be within capacity and suitable for the model’s operating range.
Avoid Coin-Based Calibration
The U.S. Mint publishes nominal coin specifications, but an individual coin is not a substitute for the calibration weight specified by your scale manufacturer. Use an appropriate reference for verification or adjustment. U.S. Mint
If the display remains zero with an appropriate reference, do not press harder or add progressively heavier objects.
Will Calibration Fix a Scale That Reads Zero?
Calibration may be appropriate when the scale responds to weight but produces a consistent error. It is not a universal fix for a scale that fails to detect a load.
Follow the model’s troubleshooting instructions. Calibration cannot remove an obstruction, change the scale’s minimum useful load or repair physical damage.
When instructed, use the specified weight and procedure. See the AWS guide on how to calibrate a digital scale.
The AWS scale FAQs also addresses loads that fail to register.
When to Contact Support
Seek help if:
- A suitable reference produces no display change.
- The platform is visibly tilted or damaged.
- The issue began after a drop, overload or spill.
- The scale cannot complete startup.
- Model-specific troubleshooting does not resolve the problem.
Provide the model number, selected unit, reference weight, purchase information and steps already completed.
Contact American Weigh Scales support for model-specific assistance.
If the scale is used for commercial transactions, do not rely on it while its performance is uncertain. NIST Handbook 44 provides technical requirements for applicable commercial weighing devices; state and local requirements also apply. NIST
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my digital scale read zero with an item on it?
Check tare, startup conditions, minimum load, units and whether the platform supports the full item. A persistent lack of response may require service.
Why does zero appear after I press tare?
Tare establishes the current load as the reference. The display then shows weight added or removed relative to that point.
Can an item be too light to register?
Yes. Check the scale’s readability, minimum-load guidance and suitability for the measurement.
Should I press down to test the scale?
No. Hand pressure can exceed capacity, especially on pocket and precision scales. Use an appropriate reference weight.
Do I need a replacement?
Not necessarily. Rule out setup and load-size issues first. If a suitable reference still produces no response, contact support.
Check the Reference Point Before Adjusting the Scale
A zero display may reflect normal tare behavior, startup zeroing or an item too light for the model. Start empty, confirm the unit and check platform clearance.
If an appropriate reference still produces no response, stop adding weight and seek model-specific help.
