AWS currently recommends 0.1g readability for many small-batch
soap-making precision tasks and 0.01g for very small tests or
concentrated additives. The Soap Guild's beginner cold-process guidance
also specifies a scale measuring to the tenth place and uses weighing
throughout the process.
For calibration, use the manufacturer's specified reference mass. NIST's
mass-calibration guidance reinforces the broader principle that reliable
mass measurement depends on suitable standards and understood
measurement performance.
A pocket scale improves control over ingredient mass. It does not
replace a properly calculated soap formula or appropriate lye-handling
procedures.
Choose enough capacity for the container and ingredient, enough
readability for the smallest quantity that matters, and a scale stable
enough to reproduce the same formulation from batch to batch.
